Auto Roll

Harvested Turf Grass
Our turf grass is cultivated on a light, organic rich loam. We harvest turf grass to order and deliver in rolls of 1sq meter. Harvesting is carried out using a Hallmarket 2010 Floating Head Harvester. As turf should be laid ideally within 24 hours of delivery we recommend that ground preparation is completed before delivery.

If turf rolls have to be stored for any length of time then they should be covered to maintain moisture. Turf will rapidly deteriorate after 2 days from harvesting during the summer months but has a longer survival time during the winter months.

The shortest possible time between harvesting and laying will result in the achieving the best result.

Calculate Quantity Required

The easiest way to establish the size of your area is to divide it up into smaller units such as rectangles and triangles as in the example below. Calculate the area of each rectangle in sq meters by multiplying the length by the width.

Calculate the area of a right angled triangle by multiplying the length of the sides at the right angle and dividing by 2. Add the areas of all the smaller units to give you your total area.

You should add 5% to the final area of turf grass you need to account for wastage.

6 x 2 = 12m2
5 x 3 = 15m2
5 x 4/2 = 10m2
12+15+10=37m2

Add 5% to your total area. You will need to order 39 rolls in this example.

Ground Preparation, Turf Laying and Aftercare

Good ground preparation is essential to produce satisfactory results. The ground should be thoroughly turned over with a spade or cultivator to a depth of 15cm, cleared of stones and weeds and raked to produce a smooth and level tilth. Do not walk on the prepared ground but work from boards or planks instead to lay the turf.

Lay the turf strip by strip across the longest length of the area, ensuring that the underside of the turf is in full contact with soil below. Butt adjoining edges and ends against each other avoiding to stretch the turf. Cut overlapping pieces and curved edges neatly with a sharp knife or half moon lawn edger. Newly laid turf should be watered thoroughly immediately following installation. Depending on weather conditions watering should be repeated daily until the turf has rooted into the soil below. In warm, dry, windy weather increased watering may be necessary. Avoid walking or mowing until the turf has become established (2-3 weeks).

New Harvester/ Tractor
The first mowing should be done with a lawn mower at its highest setting. Mow regularly, each time removing not more than one-third of the grass height. When the lawn is fully established the height of the cut can be reduced gradually to the desired height. To maintain a healthy lawn a balanced fertilizer should be applied every four to six weeks during the growing season. Always follow the manufacturers recommendations with regard to the use of lawn fertilizers.
